We have been excited for this place to open ever since word came that it was going in....and it's finally open! For it being the first week, you'd never know. Service was spot on. Nick the Greek just opened and so we thought we'd try it. I was not disappointed. It's middle eastern food fast. I would rather have this than a burger joint. I ordered the beef/lamb gyro. I thought it was going to be all in one pita but they gave me slices of their meat with pita slices. It was tasty. Balsmati rice was on point. And their side salad was very good and fresh. Like a lot of Santa Maria residents, I've been waiting for the Nick the Greek restaurant to open-- for two years! Today they had a grand opening with free food from 11:00 to 2:30, so I thought that would be a great way to try it. I waited in line for half an hour or so, but it was so worth the wait! This restaurant doesn't officially open until June 12. Today's June 9. I was scrolling on DoorDash and noticed that they were there and open so I ordered. I got the Gyro plate which came with a Greek salad. I also got an order of the Greek donuts. My donuts were missing the nuts on top but other than that everything was exactly how I ordered it. We've eaten here numerous times and it's always been really good. Last Friday, I got my normal chicken bowl. When I got home, it wasn't chicken. I couldn't tell what the meat was. The lettuce was quite wilted. If it had been in a salad, I wouldn't have eaten it. I assumed that its weird appearance was just from being saturated by juice from the meat.
Hadn't been to Nick the Greek in quite a while, so wanted to try them again - it was terribly disappointing. We ordered 3 Gyro bowls - meat, rice, lettuce, onion, cucumber, tomato & sauces. I really wanted to enjoy my experience at Nick the Greek, but unfortunately, it missed the mark on several levels. First and foremost, the portion sizes were disappointing--especially for the price. For what I paid, I expected a more generous serving, but instead, I left feeling like I'd just had a light snack. The flavor was also underwhelming. The service was good, but the food unfortunately was not, I got the falafel's salad plate and everything was very bland and tasteless.
